The Current Job vs The Aspired One
On December 22, 2023 by MisoWhen you drag your heels going to work even though you are an enthusiastic and hardworking person, it is time to reflect on your job or the company you work for. This is a serious sign to carefully think about what you do for a living or the work environment you spend most of your time. Your current job vs the aspired one.
If it is getting harder to wake up everyday feeling dislike towards your job or workplace, it is quite serious sign. I am sure that there are so many of you already having this feeling and looking for a way out.
If this problem stems from the environment you are in or from the people you work with, you can always change that by relocating to other departments or to a different company all together. I did that once and it worked well for me. At least for some time. (Please check the post Give Up the Good for the Great)
However, we are talking about a deeper concern here regarding the very activities you perform on a daily basis. You may be completely on the wrong track regarding the occupation choice you made. Or, you may like your field but may not be satisfied with your specialization within that area. In both cases, you need to discover what you actually like to find the right job for you.
Here is a simple list to help you to go through if your current job vs the aspired one.
Your current job vs the aspired one;
1. Know Who You Are
Even though it is such a big claim, knowing who you are is the fundamental requirement to find the right job. One may not fully know themselves as the life is already the very journey to find that out. Still, you have to know your persona before you decide on your path. Not only the characteristics of your personality but also your capabilities and talents are important variables to discover your potential.
If you cannot function with numbers and are not good at math, don’t pick computer engineering just because it pays well or it is very popular job in your country. Similarly, do not ignore the career options just because they are not respected enough in the society. If your society respects only natural sciences, do not eliminate the option of being a sociologist. You may rock the area with your abilities and talents. Also, you can always consider to do that job internationally as you know the world is round and no one is chained to the country they were born. There are millions of opportunities out there and you might as well enjoy exploring them.
However, if you have some sorts of obstacles to have this as an option then it is a different story to be discussed. We can talk about that in other posts if you like. Just my advice here is not to limit your options and create your own. For instance, you can be a university teacher in the field mentioned above which can bring the respect anyway.
If you are good at what you do, everyone will eventually have to respect, don’t forget.
2. Know the Job You Seek
Usually, we picture our aspired jobs with only the aspects we like about them. This provides biased understanding of that particular job. For instance, if you have quite good social skills, this does not guarantee that you will love being a sales person. You may hate traveling around all the time. Not having a permanent residence may make you uncomfortable. Even though you own what it takes to be a good sales person thanks to your social skills, conditions of a sales job and its requirements may not be a well fit for you.
Hence, knowing fully what it takes to be good at a certain job requires good research about its working conditions, mid-to-long term career promises and etc. It is vital to know what a particular job brings along before you decide on to invest the time and effort to it as your career path.
3. Give Yourself Chances
Since the life is a horizontal journey not a vertical one, you don’t have to climb up the ladder to be considered successful. Every step taken ahead is an improvement and deserves to be appreciated.
You should really know that you don’t have to make right decisions every time you make one. If you mess up a decision, give yourself a chance to fix that which will eventually take you to the state where you first intended to be. The point is to obtain the lesson through that decision. It does not make any difference if you make wrong or right one as long as you can take the lesson from it.
Every step of this process you improve and therefore, deserve to be rewarded. Try to explore your options and realize your mistakes and shortcomings then move on.
Building a career is not a jenga game where you ruin everything once you pull the wrong stone. Instead, it should serve as a mean to make you satisfied with yourself. This way, you could explore new you everyday and keep improving yourself.
